The World’s Hottest Chip is Sold Out

Have you been dreaming of a way to embarrass yourself online AND cause yourself long-lasting pain? Well, then we have great news for you! Paqui, the Texas-based tortilla chip company, has reintroduced their #OneChipChallenge for all you masochists out there.

Except, the chip is sold out. Kind of. Paqui’s website is no longer selling these chips until Fall of 2018. Anyone who wants to try the gut-churning chip can only do so by entering a raffle, or shelling out tons of cash (more on that in a moment).

Originally introduced in 2016, the Carolina Reaper Chip grabs the title of the World’s Hottest Chip. Each package contains a singular chip (yes, one chip) and costs $4.99. Oh, and they come lovingly packaged in an adorable tiny coffin box. Awww.

Don’t mess with me: A warning on the back of the box also cautions eaters to wash your hands thoroughly after even touching the chip.

What is the #OneChipChallenge?

Consumers are tasked to eat the Carolina Reaper chip, film themselves eating it, and then load the (likely humiliating) evidence to their social media profiles before January 31st, 2018. Tagging your posts with the appropriate hashtags will officially enter you into the challenge.

Is it really the world’s hottest chip?

This chip is hotter than the fires of Mordor. Seriously, Frodo could have just thrown one of these chips at the ring and the story would have ended right there.

But really, no one seems to be disputing that. The actual Carolina Reaper pepper, the chip’s namesake ingredient, measures up to 2.2 million Scoville heat units (SHU), the designated measure to judge the spiciness level of foods. For reference, Sriracha weighs in around 2,200 SHU and your average jalapeno is only about 5,000.

Not only is this chip’s primary ingredient the Carolina Reaper pepper, the second most-used pepper in their recipe is the Ghost pepper, which touts about 1 million SHU. But fret-not all ye health conscious spice lovers, this chip is gluten free!

Going viral

Everyone and their mother has been trying this challenge. You-Tube personalities and talk-show hosts alike have all been testing their limits with this popular craze. Even radio shows have been trying the chip live on-air! (Spoiler alert: it’s not pretty).

Well, you have a few options: If you’re a gambling man (or woman), you might try your luck at the Carolina Reaper Chip lottery. All you have to do is buy a specially- marked bag of Paqui chips, and enter the code from inside the bag on their website. 1 in every 10 bags will win you the world’s hottest chip.

If you aren’t feeling so lucky, then you can find the chips sold on reseller sites like eBay or Amazon. These sites have them offered for anywhere from $60 to $100!
